Updated Stanley Cup Betting
Odds for 2020
The
NHL appears to be on the way back. After a several month hiatus, the
league announced that when it does return to play, 24 teams will compete in a
postseason that is in two hub cities without fans. All that being said, this
year’s postseason will feature a number of teams who on paper seem like they
can win it all. But especially in a postseason played under these
circumstances, it’s safe to expect the unexpected.
Here
are all of the Stanley Cup odds for each team returning to play, along with a brief look at
some of the more notable teams to keep an eye on.
The
Bruins entered the hiatus as the league’s top team, the only one to reach 100 points
with a record of 44-14-12. They are spurred by the dynamic first line of Rocket
Richard co-winner David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron, plus
stud defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Vezina-front runner Tuukka Rask. As a team
that has allowed fewer goals (174) than anyone in hockey this season, it’s fair
to see that they’re the team to beat once the postseason begins.
Lightning
Tampa
Bay was the talk of the regular season in 2018-19, but were on the losing end
of one of the biggest upsets in NHL history. They’re hoping to exercise those
demons this year after a regular season that saw them go 43-21-6 (92 points).
With stars like Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman ready to go, along with a
now-healthy Steven Stamkos, the league’s highest-scoring offense should be a
threat to any team if there is very little rust.
Golden Knights
The
Golden Knights finished the regular season as Pacific Division champions once
again, going 39-24-8 to earn 86 points. Led by Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty,
each of whom surpassed the 60-point mark, Vegas is a group that has excellent
chemistry and two established goaltenders in Marc-Andre Fleury and Robin
Lehner. This as an example of a surging team post-All-Star break that could be
dangerous if they regain that momentum.
Avalanche
The
Avs found a way to overcome a barrage of injuries to end up with the
second-best record in the West. Led primarily by Nathan MacKinnon, along with a breakout
season from rookie d-man Cale Makar, Colorado finished at 42-20-8 with 92
points. Their 237 goals scored is the most in the conference, and they could be
a team who benefits from the time off to get healthy.
Blues
The
defending champs didn’t have any hangover this year, finishing with a
conference-best 94 points due to a 42-19-10 record. St. Louis is a deep bunch that
doesn’t really flash any weaknesses. Five different players, including Ryan
O’Reilly and Brayden Schenn, all finished with more than 50 points, while
Jordan Binnington cemented himself as one of the league’s best netminders. With
their mid season spell long past them, the Blues will remain as the team to
beat heading into the playoffs.
Other
Some
other teams that are interesting include the Penguins. Pittsburgh is
a veteran bunch who has plenty of playoff experience and time to get healthy.
The Capitals were an offensive juggernaut, while the Stars were
defensive stalwarts, so each of them can become serious contenders if they
become more well-rounded. One team who could surprise people is the Rangers.
Although they are just +3500, their duo of Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad is
one of the best in hockey, and both could get hot enough to propel New York
deep into the playoffs.
As
if the Stanley Cup playoffs aren’t already unpredictable
enough, playing them in neutral arenas with no fans will make it all the more
difficult to forecast. But out of the 24 teams remaining, a solid 12 seem like
they have a realistic chance to hoist the Stanley Cup.
