Pick | Washington @ Detroit
It’s a tale
of two quarterbacks in Detroit on Sunday. The Lions Matthew Stafford left last
week’s game with Minnesota and went into concussion protocol. He is listed as
probable and is expected to play.

On the
other end, it’s Alex Smith who will get the start for Washington. It’s a big
deal because Smith suffered that horrific lower leg injury in 2018 and hadn’t
even played in a game until this season. Smith’s first start might be enough
inspiration for Washington bettors.

Smith took
over Washington’s offense last week when Kyle Allen went down with an ankle
injury. Smith ended up throwing for 325 yards, but he did throw three
interceptions and Washington ended up on the wrong end of a 23-20 defeat at the
hands of the New York Giants.
Last week
was just the second time Washington managed to reach the 20-point mark. The
team averages 19.1 points per game, 30th in the NFL. The lack of a running game
really hurts. Washington ranks 29th in the league in rushing and totaled just
37 yards on the ground a week ago.

the way to go!
Detroit
isn’t that much better. The Lions average 24.6 points a game for the season but
have scored just 21 per game over their last three. The big problem in Detroit
is defense.
The Lions
give up 30 points per game on defense. That is 28th in the league. You don’t
win many games when you give up four-plus touchdowns every game. Detroit has
lost its last two to Indianapolis and Minnesota, giving up 41 and 34 points,
respectively, in the process.
Bettors
looking for premium
NFL picks should also take into consideration the play
of the Lions under head coach Matt Patricia. The former Patriots defensive
coordinator was supposed to launch a new era in Detroit. Instead, it’s been
much more of the same.
The Lions
appear uninspired much of the time, which opponents have taken advantage of
especially when they play at Ford Field in Detroit. In 19 games at Ford Field,
Lions’ opponents are 12-7 ATS.
The real
interesting thing concerns road underdogs playing Patricia’s Lions at Ford
Field. It’s not a huge sample, but those road dogs are 4-1 ATS.

Washington
is a 3-point underdog and they are also coming off that loss to the Giants. In
2020, road underdogs coming off a loss have been profitable for bettors. So
far, they are 26-15 ATS, a winning percentage of 63 percent. This continues the
trend from last year when road underdogs went 45-28-5 (58 percent).
Detroit has
only covered in five of their last 19 games and, surprisingly, has yet to win a
home game in 2020. With backup Chase Daniel potentially starting or playing at
some point and the lackluster effort of the Lions under Patricia, Washington’s
Smith will keep this one close.
